That turtle...

...seems the turtle has been returned... indeed a move in the right direction by all involved parties...

... gotta make a couple of Cds this afternoon for the big shindig this weekend, with a heavy emphasis on Country music this year...figure that since I heard from only a few people, with one person giving me a list of about 10 country songs, i think the chapter will be line dancing a lot on Saturday...

...well, maybe not... I think I can come up with some songs...gotta hit itunes today before my Pepsi songs all go away...

While I love my children more than anything (except probably my wife), it will be good to get away this weekend for a couple of nights and be able to sleepp in past 6:15am for a change. I think we both are starting to drag with the constant noise and demands of the children. Not that we would ever want to do without them, but it is just a constant drain on your energy, especially since there are two of them.

sleep?

I was not in a real good mood last night. i think my blood sugar was high, and I was just feeling lousy. I tried to go to bed early... of course, after days of sleeping until 7:15 and having to force him to get up, Ian decides he wants to come into the bedroom at 5:38am this morning... So here I am at work at 6:45... I feel better, but I just know I need to get some rest soon, or I will start to break down.

Today is my wifes birthday..Happy Birthday, Jessica. I still need to get her something...guess I will have to hit up Walmart for a cd or something...she says I dont have to get her anything, but I knw better.

kids...sometimes you have to let them touch the stove....

Kinda funny, listening to this song by Dr. Dre a few minutes ago... thought it was profound for the rumblings I am hearing about...

Who you think taught you to smoke trees
Who you think brought you the o' G's
Eazy-E's Ice Cube's and D.O.C's and Snoop D O double G's
And a group that said muthafuck the police
Gave you a tape full of dope beats
The bomb weed stroll through in you hood
And when your album sales wasn't doin too good
Who's the doc that he told you to go see
Ya'll better listen up closely
All you niggas that said that I turned pop
Or the Firm flop
ya'll are the reason Dre ain't been getting no sleep
So fuck ya'll all of ya'll
If ya'll don't like me blow me
Ya'll are gonna keep fuckin around wit me
And turn me back to the old me

(Eminem)
Nowadays everybody wanna talk like they got something to say
But nothin comes out when they move they lips
Just a buncha gibberish
And muthafuckas act like they forgot about Dre

Constitution and stuff

It always amuses me and interest me whenever amendments to the Constitution of the Kappa Beta chapter come up. One is in issue now, and while I dont think that it would have a chapter killing affect, I do think it might need to be tweaked some. But they will work it out, i am sure... it amuses me becuase so many things come up now that we never thought would be an issue when we hashed out the document in Spring 1994. Now, here it is 10 years later, and iit is still a work in progress.

Of course, things are a little different now. The internet now allows for the chapter to be in each others lives 24/7...these guys know exactly what most others are doing everyday, at all times... makes for a very different dynamic than 10 years ago...As close as we were back then, i wonder what it would be like if we had the type of personal access available now....

The Lake Show

...ah, yes...my Lakers seem to be rounding into form as the season winds down...while i dont usually keepup with the NBA too much during the season, i do keep a wary eye on the standings and make a weekly trip to NBA.com to check up on things...caught the Lake show last night late...seems like Kobe, Shaq, Teh Mailman and the Glove are doing quite well for themselves these days...just nice... think I might have to get that black Lakers t shirt when i get paid tomorrow...of course, that is the kiss of death.... I got my Raiders hat, and they just went ass to pot... Braves never can get over the hump, despite their greatness....

...anyway, forgot to fix a lunch today... gotta go home and eat those wings we cooked last night... have to put carseats in my car to pick up the kids...Jessica is going to a friends house this evening...wonder if anyone will call me or come over like they do when Jessica is at home alone with the kids... they never do, and my guess is that noone will this evening either... never quite sure why it is like that... Ileave town and 3 poeople come over to help Jessica. Jessica leaves town and noone even bothers to call...

...Spend all your time waiting
for that second chance
for a break that would make it okay
there's always one reason
to feel not good enough
and it's hard at the end of the day
I need some distraction
oh beautiful release
memory seeps from my veins
let me be empty
and weightless and maybe
I'll find some peace tonight

in the arms of an angel
fly away from here
from this dark cold hotel room
and the endlessness that you fear
you are pulled from the wreckage
of your silent reverie
you're in the arms of the angel
may you find some comfort there

so tired of the straight line
and everywhere you turn
there's vultures and thieves at your back
and the storm keeps on twisting
you keep on building the lie
that you make up for all that you lack
it don't make no difference
escaping one last time
it's easier to believe in this sweet madness oh
this glorious sadness that brings me to my knees

in the arms of an angel
fly away from here
from this dark cold hotel room
and the endlessness that you fear
you are pulled from the wreckage
of your silent reverie
you're in the arms of the angel
may you find some comfort there
you're in the arms of the angel
may you find some comfort here

really cool...

...to be able to carry on some sort of conversation with you kids for the first time. Its really simple stuff, like Ian saying "more juice", me saying ,"you want more juice?" , Ian nodding and saying "more juice". A whole lot better than him simply crying...

Kids...

Driving into work this morning, I heard about the 7 year old boy missing in Anderson... made me realize that I am going to have to keep my children within my eyesight until they are walking out the door to go to college. Seriously... and even then, how many stories have we heard about college students disappearing?... I think about how horrible it would be to have your child taken away. For anyone reading this who doesnt have a kid, you simply cant understand until you have one. Your parents do...you do not. Your kid(s) are your most valuable possession, not simply because of the monetary value...that is a given. You sink 100s of thousands of dollars into your children that you will NEVER see recouped. That isnt it. It is that your children are...YOU.... they are you 50 years from now...they are you 200 years from now... they are the product of they love you have with your spouse. And if they are taken away, you lose so much more than just your child... you lose the very essence of...YOU.

...at least today has a good ending for that family...they have found that missing child.

...thinking about taking my high end digital camera to formal and taking "official" pictures of people...need to do a sample and give it to the Social committee at their next meeting.

todays to do things... and its already 11:00am...Call Erik, Call Kristen, make eye appointment, do grant proposal, find software solution for formal pictures, investigate HES bulb problem, research LCD purchase for English Department

My observations from the SED Convention

Having returned home, and having had ample time to reflect upon the events of the latest fraternity convention in Alabama, I have reached some conclusions...

1) That I was right about the fact that Kappa Beta brothers DONT have to drink to fellowship and have fun together...

2) That Kappa Beta will return to the SED convention next year with a renewed aggressive attitude toward all aspects of the fraternity. Our overall presentation is too laidback and lowkey. We need to come out swinging. Our chapter report needs to catch everyones attention. We need to do a representative, TIGHT, step show that leaves no doubt that we prepared, executed and represented Clemson University. We need to present an airtight bid for district convention that overwhelms any potential rival bidder and leaves no doubt. Any candidates for office will be well rehearsed and have airtight answers to most potential road block questions. (not that Kelly was unprepared, or unqualified..she got robbed, plain and simple). Kappa Beta will have a large representation, band commitments notwistanding. The Kappa Beta delegate will continue the subtle leadership model represented by Jay in Tuskeghee. We will upgrade all aspects... from a unified front in all meetings, to particiaption in reading bands, to chapter display. We will do this...not to win awards...but to follow our motto. Awards will come if we do this....

3) i have had it up to .."here"... with the HBCUs and the HBCU mentality. I mean...seriously...how long can you ride that pony?... but I do agree with Jay in that the effective coalition of the HBCU's may have cracked at Tuskegee....

4) The "bloc" of Iota, Zeta Chi, Kappa Mu, and Kappa Beta MUST be restored. Once that is brought back into place, Gamma Nu and Alpha Eta will come too, as will hangers on Epsilon, Pi and UCF.... It makes no sense that any brother from our bloc would drop down and run against some one from another chapter...unless you have been living a lie and secretly have contempt for that chapter. I believe Kappa Mu has this contempt for Kappa Beta. I have seen this manifested over the past 3 years... and I believe its sad. I do not see where Kappa Beta has ever worked against Kappa Mu, but I see consistent evidence to this case regarding KM against KB.

5)the internal conflicts of Kappa Beta need to remain internal. There is NO reason Zeta Chi brothers should have intimate knowledge of Kappa Beta business...Kappa Mu brothers should NOT know about KB MEP business before Kappa Beta brothers even know.... if it is time to circle the wagons, it is .... I say we need to cover our backs...NOW. if we dont, no one will.

My Basketball brackets are just simple trash...just trash.... not even worth my time watchin the tournament anymore...

I had plenty of time to think during my 5 hour drive yesterday. Lots of thoughts on the Fraternity as a whole, and the Kappa Beta chapter in specific. More to come soon. keep checkin

Oh, last night was way, way too wierd

First...right after meeting with my superior, I returned back to my office to get a couple of things and head home.... as I was sitting at the monitor, I started to get that all too familiar feeling of" i think I have to throw up...now!".... i grabbed my keys and headed for the bathroom. After throwing up there, I headed home, feeling a little out of sorts and perplexed, since I hadnt seemed sick just an hour ago. By the time I pulled into my driveway, i had to throw up again. Dashing into the backyard, I puked again there. Really weird.... I proceeded to throw up 8 times last night between 5 oclock and 10 oclock. And I still dont know what the hell happened....dont think it was food poisoning, for that causes stuff to exit out both ends, and i wasnt doing that. ..just dont get it.... I feel a whole lot better right now, whichi s good since I am leaving in a couple of days to go to SED convention.

...speaking of Sed convention, kinda interesting that so many people dont have rides. I know one group of people had their plans get changed on them so I can understand that. But what of the other people? just confusing to me.... this is why I try to pound in the actives heads that you MUST think past tomorrow and plan proactively, not reactively. still doesnt seem to be computing....

...got the ALumni newsletter today...looking good...

...filling out my bracket...think I am going to go with North Carolina (my childhood team)in one, and Kentucky in the other. I kinda pull for Tubby Smith (coach) since he is black, and Kentucky fans are notoriously the most racist in the country. One of the last schools to integrate their basketball team, their legendary coach (Rupp) was rumoured to be a Grand Dragon. Currently, the fans there are always cool as long as the team wins championships, but as soon as the team loses ONE game, they are calling for the coach to be fired...never heard that when Pitino was there, did you?

.... getting the laptop setup to dial in using my cell phone to keep up with the scores of Friday and Saturday during meetings, as well as keep up with email and emergencies at work.... also gotta get my GPS plugged back into the laptop. Always fun to see visually as you travel where you are, how fast you are going, how long until you get there...all that.

Still havent heard much about songs for the Formal..guess I will pick them out myself. I only had one response...for Usher "Yeah"...i could make several remixes of that and just play that over and over...might get boring...

another addition to the KB family

It was announced that Andrea (Randolph) Albertson, former President of Kappa Beta, had a baby girl recently. How cool is that? This should definitely make reunions interesting....

Memories

I remember the last time I went to Tuskeghee for convention. That was an adventure.... and I thought there was NO way an SED convention would be held there again. alas...the actives have spoken, and we will adventure forth again into uncertainty and... well, you shall learn.

...a couple of warnings...better be ready to get to the banquet real early, or you wont even be in the same room as all the other people... better get to the step show real early, just so you even have a seat. Although I must admit that the best step show I have ever seen was there the last time. Better get to the hotel and get your rooms as soon as you can, or they will simply give them to someone else who gets there before you... and forget a refund. I certainly hope KB follows my advice...why do I have a suspicion that something will go wrong... Lord, I hope not.

... the hotel we were forced to stay at outside of town was by far the worse hotel I have ever seen. The pool had algea growing visibly and the rooms...sigh... lets not go there. But it was there where Kappa Beta scored its victory and secured the SED convention bid for Greenville...that was way cool.

...just got through updating kelly's letter of Recommendation for office. Hope the chapter supports her better than they did last year. Seems like too many people were concerned with impressing Kappa Mu than supporting their own chapter last year....

Wow....

...thats pretty much sums up my reaction.... "Wow!"

The official Gimps of Clemson

Why?....WHY?.... WHY!!!??? why must the Clemson Men's basketball team always have to look like a bunch of Gimps when they play on TV? Its like they will play like they have a clue for 3 minutes, then suddenly, they cant even dribble the ball without dribbling it off their own feet. Or tripping up while running down the court. Im serious here. They actually will dribble the ball off their feet. No, I mean, they really do this. Not once every 4 or 5 games...BUT EVERY GAME!!!!! ...I see viable talent here. Ford is a growing talent, Robinson is servicable at guard, Akingbala has shown flashes of potential, Babalola has tools to get to the basket, and Lamar Rice is a baller, even if he is clueless. But what they hell happen to Christie? He has this "Deer in the headlights" look about him. No doubt he is the most talented player on the team, but he just seems to wander about, afraid to make a mistake. and Vernon Hamilton has that " I was awesome in High School but now everyone is as good as me so I am intimidated" look about him. Hobbs...well, I really cant slam him. He obviously would be better suited for football, but he gave 100 percent most of the time, so I really cant fault him for that. If Purnell can somehow get the turnover thing eliminated, maybe the Gimp factor will go away. but now, they are painful to watch on TV, because you just know the other shoe is about to drop, at any moment. Reminds me of Clemson Football several years ago, before Tommey Bowden came in and changed the culture of the team...

Can someone answer me this question?

Can anyone who might read this and is thinking about voting for John Kerry give me a legitiimate reason to vote for him? and NO, "he isnt George Bush" isnt good enough.... or " I hate george Bush" isnt good enough... I want to know what this man stands for. WHat is he going to do? I dont want to hear the rhetoric. I want to hear what he plans to do. So far, I have seen no platform. And until I can see him do something other than call George Bush names, I will remain in doubt, despite my democratic party leanings. I have my doubts about George Bush, but he has stoo d the test of leadership, even if you dont always agree with his decisions. I guess I am officially Independent in this Presidential election. I just would like to hear three or so valid reasons as to why I should give John Kerry my vote. I havent seen it yet from all the Hollywood types who only seem to blather the "I Hate Bush" crap.... havent we grown past this?

It snowed last night...

..oh wait, When I looked outside this morning, it looks as if it didnt even rain at all. What is up with that? Supposed to at least snow (not stick), and all that and the weather people got it right...again....snicker... Jessica is going to see Lisa and TJ's kid today. I cant go, which sucks. i have to finish up this damn RFP (Request for Proposal) and sit in a meeting. I wish i could have a day off, especially since I worked half days last Saturday and Sunday. At some point, I will take a day off...Maybe my birthday or something.
... The Tiger baseball team is off to a rather slow start. Got slapped around by USC over the weekend. I hope this isnt another lost year like last year...

...starting to think about the Kappa Beta 10 year anniversary celebration. I havent heard the current chapter mention it much. Of course, they dont seem to think much about anything past the weekend, so I cant expect them to preparing a celebration for the chapter alumni scattered all over the eastern seaboard... I have contacted several locations in the area where I think we could do something in the Spring of 2005. i dont know... Since National Convention is that summer, we may need to consider some sort of Alumni celebration/Crown Pearl Ball. I think that might work best as to allow the actives an ability to participate in their normal Formal, as well as combine with the alumni gig. I will need to run this by the Executive Council and let them bounce it around amongst themselves. If I can give the Alumni a full year to plan to come into town for a weekend, i think we can have an awesome turnout. What a great opportunity that would be for the current actives to see some of those names they have memorized, yet never seen, as well as an excellent fundraising event, as well...

Women should have labels on their foreheads saying, "Government Health Warning: women can seriously damage your brains, genitals, current account, confidence, razor blades, and good standing among your friends."

All set for the Nascar All Star race in May. Got 4 tickets and me, jessica, Lynn and her husband are going... this should be fun. We can perhaps have a day without the kids (not that we dont like them or anything) and maybe drink a beer or two and do some serious people watching....

... Lakers win again, and my man Harvick wins the Busch race, and is on his way to a second place yesterday when his crew LETS him run out of gas. HOW THE HELL DO YOU DO THAT?..oh well, falls to 6th in points, only 6 points away from 3rd. STill in good shape. Lets not run out of gas again, OK?

Got to watch Da Band this weekend. someone else online said it profoundly..."If you're going to have ig'nint blacks on television, don't go about it half-assed — do it all the way!"... i couldnt agree more. I watch this show for the absolute amusment factor of seeing how stupid these people are, and how they dont seem to understand the fabulous opportunity they have. Oh, i also like to see how many different Sean John garments the people on the show will wear... and how many differnt throwback jerseys I can see...

Ok...whats on tap? SED in a couple of weeks. got to go down to Tuskeghee and see whats up with the FRAT... then we got Formal, then the race in May, then perhaps a mountain weekend.... thats the grand schedule for me, and what Im lookin for. Sprinkle in an eye exam and glasses, dentist appointments, a new office at work and the usual new stuff everyday with the twins should make for a cool Spring...

damn..i missed it...

..in my glee of the downfall of the Wicked witch of the West last night, i totally forgot Makin tha Band season premiere... now I gotta set my VCR at work to pick it up sometime this weekend, when I know they will rerun it... besides I was not really feeling well anyway, took some of that liquid niquil stuff and was out in about 6 minutes.... Ian is sick too, so I had to come home and be with him until Jessica gets home, after which I will return to work. I actually like being able to work from home...forward my office phone to the cell, login into First Class and nobody even knows Im gone....well, my boss and counterpart know, but the customers dont...

Thank GOD!!! Holy Father OF ALL!!! The wicked witch is dead!!!....

...which old witch? The wicked witch...Omarosa is finally OUT....OF....HERE..... Trump finally came to his senses and got rid of the bitchiest bitch I have ever seen in this fad of reality TV. I actually jumped up from my chair and knocked over my Diet Mountain Dew, just like when Clemson beat the snot out of USC in November. YES!!!! now, i know these shows only show a very small percentage of what actually goes on, but if they were trying to portray this woman in a bad light, they did a might fine job..... seems like she thought that her way was the right way, and that everyone else was wrong. Nothing wrong with being opinionated, but at some point, if you are going to win people over or be a leader, you got to be able to win over some people. You have to coexist with the people you are working with or trying to lead. The "Bull in a China shop" routine only gets you so far, then slowly but surely, the bull fighters close in, and no matter how valiant you fight, you are going down eventually....

yep....RULE #1 of playing the game... NEVER TRASH TALK UNTIL THE GAME IS IN HAND!!!

let's see...

... cleaning up around my desk. 15 empty Diet Rite cola cans.... 7 rubbermaid/tupperware containers(empty)... 8 diet pepsi bottles. I am frantically getting Diet pepsi because you can get free downloads for itunes. Did you know that you can look at the writting on the cap without opening it to see if you are a winner or not? Whenever I stop at the local Qwickee Mart, I get a diet pepsi, and I make sure to look at the cap (without opening it) to get my free song....

... Chris Webber is a liar. sorry to say it, but he played the "poor guy from the hood" card way too many times, and we now find out he was getting money from people IN HIGH SCHOOL!!!... what you got to say about that, Brown?

...need to get some MP3's for the Frat formal in April. I think I have some, but I need to get some more. based on last year's gig, I will need about 30 songs... doesnt seem like much, but I played less than that at the Gatlinburg Ball.

... i used my diagnostic tool on my car yesterday. I can hook up my laptop to to my Jetta and it tells me all the info about the car, including error codes that make the check engine light come on. I found out that I have a glow plug circuit problem, which is why I am only getting about 45 miles/gallon, instead of 60mpg... kinda cool, I can view all types of info (compression rate, rpms, etc...)

....The Braves made easy work of the Georgia Bulldawgs yesterday. Of course, the Yankees will win the next 14 world series titles now...so its all moot.

a memory

...talking about old people reminds me of my grandmother, who passed away a few years ago. I remember how frustrating (and amusing) it would be when she would have the woodburning stove burning full blast, and it would be 75 degrees outside. I will always remember her saying, "it cold in here"...i know you guys with older granparents know exactly what I am talking about.....

Lisa and TJ had their kid today. All is well with them.

what is up with the old people???

..so since my student staff is out on Spring Break, I have to make the deliveries of equipment to the Cont Ed and old people classes myself. As I was scarrying an Overhead to a room, an obviously disoriented older lady comes over to me and complains about not being able to get into a certain room, and why this university couldnt have the doors unlocked so elderly people wouldnt have to stand out in the cold... (quick check of the weather shows it is 63 degrees aoutside right now). I kinda looked at her and siad that I might be able to look into opening the doors for her. SO I go up to the door. It is a type of door where the handle doesnt turn. You simply have to pull it. I pull it open and she proceeds to grumble some lame excuse about someone else unlocking it or something....

...So John Edwards drops out. Now I have to look at John Kerry for 7 or 8 months. The man scares me and he is typical politician. But then again, they all are. I just dont feel comfortable that Kerry will take care of our defense. WHile I havent really agreed with Bush on some things, at least he hasnt put forward a weak fron to the terrorists of the world. I worry that Kerry will, leading to more September 11 type crap. Too bad Bush has had to replay the "sins" of his father, and very well could be another one and done president. Its amazing how starting a family and having to worry about these types of issues clearly changes how you vie politics. A few years ago, I would have definitely said that I was a DEMOCRAT...now I think I dont know what I may be now, if anything. Independent may be my classification. I may simply see who wins me over by November. I know one thing..I cant deal with the far left democrat thinking. That stuff is stupid and unrealistic. And the far right, well... I think that is why Clinton was succesfull in getting elected... middle of the road Democrat is a pretty good way to go. But Kerry has made statements like the US needing to get permission from the UN befor edefending ourselves. That makes me nervous...while I think Bush went a little too far in perhaps attacking Iraq, I also dont think we need to be asking permission for anything from the UN.

...anxiously awaiting word from Lisa and TJ on the arrival of their kid....

Time for replacement/upgrades...

Lets see...time for new Shocks, brakes, headlights, taillights and a car wash for the Jetta. Gotta love that tax refund... also, its time for me to finally get my glasses replaced. I have gone about a year without them, And I need to go ahead and get new ones. I think I am going to go with the Malcolm X, Blues brothers old school glasses again, just like the ones that broke. But we shall see..perhaps something a little more modern/contemporary will be in order....

Erik Brown sent me a Times article about gay marraige from the Black perspective. Now, I dont really get into the Black/White thing, although it obviously is a HUGE part of my life, for obvious reasons. And I am kinda inclined to disagree with the article. But it was nice to get communication from Brown. Always good to know he hasnt been mugged in the City... just wish he'd get some sort of bug in his ear and move to Greenville or something and work in some boutique on Main Street.

... kinda wonder who in the Fraternity reads this little thingy. I know that I am in thought as to how to address the chapter on this issue in general. Since we now have brothers from other chapters chiming in on KB internal problems, it might be time to consider some things. But how do you really legislate this? Its kinda hard to try to curtain free speech, isnt it? But yet comments being made by brothers are being viewed all over the country. And opinions are being made about the chapter from afar. While people are very true to their feelings and speak from their hearts, it is too easy for someone to draw conclusions about the chapter as a whole based upon one brothers point of view being expressed. And the whole story is not told... all I know is that the moment I get an email from the CFR or a National Officer, I will be upset. SO I amy have to move to curtail this sort of thing soon. But the question remains...How the hell do I do that? Any ideas?

Does anyone have any questions for me?

...that is the question I posed to the MEP class yesterday during my intervieew with them. And initially no one seemed to have a question to ask. Now really, you mean you are looking to join a group, and the one person who knows the most about the organization in Clemson is sitting right in front of you, making himself available to you? nad you dont ask him anything more than what is your nickname? sigh... well, eventually, some of them asked a couple of relevant questions, and it did seem to go well. The class in its current configuration seems set to go. I place them 2 years down the road getting ready to host a convention (hopefully) and i think the potential is there that they could pull it off. For that is how I have to look at candidates a lot of times... how will this person be able to handle 750 people coming from all over the United States to a convention?... for it isnt the current leadership, or even the people elected this Spring who will bear rthe brunt of the future...its the current class, and those initiated last year who will be in charge by that time...

...no Nascar race this past weekend. Man, that sucked. RAcin starts again this weekend and its time for the 29 to get to work. Also, my absolute favorite sport, baseball, is cranking up. Spring Training is going and the Braves first game is Thursday. I believe it is time to crank out the Braves jersey and hat in honor of another run at a Division title. ...by the way, i havent seen any pictures, but I believe the Clemson baseball team changes their hats slightly, going to a more subtle "C" on their hat. More investigation, if not an absolute trip to a game, will confirm this.
